Students who wish to apply for a research stay should carefully select the supervisor and university that best meets their needs. To supervise a Visiting Research Student, the researcher must have a faculty appointment (be a “faculty member” with title of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor).
Students have many options for identifying host supervisor.
- Speak to your home supervisor to see if they know any researchers at University of British Columbia (UBC).
- Look through the UBC’s faculty directory.
- Visit the UBC’s official website for the databse of UBC professors and their research interests, then make sure they are available to host VISR students. https://www.grad.ubc.ca/virs/hosts
- Search through faculties’s websites:
- Visit other UBC pages:
- Literature Review – did you read an article by a UBC researcher that has had an impact on your research?
- Utilize tools such as Google Scholar – type in “University of British Columbia” and key words. Limit the search to the previous 3-5 years.
Students may contact a potential supervisor directly by email.
When reaching out to faculty members, you should:
- Introduce yourself, your program, your university (attach a resume or CV).
- Identify the scholarship program to which you wish to apply (SEED), and that if successful, your visit will be funded. Include a link to the scholarship page, as many of our researchers are not familiar with these scholarship programs.
- Briefly describe your research project idea; if you have a research proposal or summary, include that as an attachment.
- Explain why you want to work with them (that specific researcher); when you want to start your research stay (e.g. September 2025), and for how long (e.g. 4 months).
- Copy int.grants@global.unair.ac.id on the email.
Applications are evaluated by EduCanada based on the following:
- The linkage of the proposed research or study that the student will undertake in Canada to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
- The candidate’s commitment to use their proposed research or studies in Canada to help combat poverty and narrow the development gap in the ASEAN region
- Merit of the research or study to be undertaken in Canada
- Benefit to the home institution and peers
- Benefit to the Canadian institution, supervisor and peers
- Strength of the linkages to be created through the proposed exchange
