EUC UNAIR Guest Lecture Explores Mental Health, Resilience, and Bulgarian Medical Education

On June 11, 2026, the European Union Center (EUC) at Universitas Airlangga successfully held a guest lecture titled “Mental Health Under Pressure: The Impact of Macro Trends and the Erosion of Social Capital-Building Resilience”, featuring distinguished speakers Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Zhivkov Garov and Prof. Petya Trendafilova from the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria. The lecture offered participants a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing mental health while also introducing Bulgaria’s medical education system, historical development, cultural heritage, and recent achievements.
The lecture began with a discussion on how external conditions can influence mental health. One notable point highlighted was the impact of climate and seasonal changes on psychological well-being. Countries that experience long periods of cold or gray weather often face unique mental health challenges, demonstrating that environmental factors can shape emotional resilience and quality of life. The speaker contrasted these conditions with Indonesia’s tropical climate, expressing appreciation for the country’s warm weather and sharing personal reflections on enjoying visits to Indonesia.
Beyond mental health, this lecture session introduced the audience to the Medical University of Sofia, one of Bulgaria’s oldest medical institutions, established in 1917. The university has a long-standing tradition of medical education and currently offers programs across several faculties, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and public health. It has also expanded opportunities for international students by providing full English language programs, making medical education in Bulgaria more accessible to learners from around the world.
Another topic discussed was Bulgaria’s integration into Europe and the opportunities it provides for mobility and international cooperation. The speaker explained the advantages of travel within the European region and shared perspectives on recent economic developments, including Bulgaria’s adaptation to the euro. Participants gained a broader understanding of how regional integration can influence tourism and everyday life.
To complement the academic discussion, the session showcased Bulgaria’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Videos and stories introduced participants to the country’s scenic landscapes, traditional customs, and unique cultural expressions. The speaker also highlighted Bulgaria’s recent achievement in winning the Eurovision Song Contest, an accomplishment that allows the country to host the following year’s competition and reflects its growing presence on the international stage. Participants were further introduced to Bulgarian music and traditions through examples of folk inspired rhythms and cultural practices that remain important parts of the nation’s identity. Interactive moments, such as language exercises and tongue twisters, further engaged participants and offered a glimpse into the Bulgarian language and daily life.
Overall, the guest lecture successfully combined discussions on mental health with broader cultural and educational perspectives. By connecting resilience, environmental influences, and cross-cultural understanding, the event encouraged participants to appreciate the importance of global perspectives in addressing contemporary challenges while strengthening academic and international collaboration.
